석면의 사용이 1986년에 금지되었음에도 불구하고, 석면은 여전히 덴마크내에서 직업으로 인한 사망원인 1위이다. 석면에 의한 사망자수는 작업장내 사고로 인한 사망자 수보다 4~5배 높다.

코펜하겐 석면 심포지움에서는 덴마크와 세계 각국에서 발생하는 석면비극의 원인을 다음과 같이 나눴다.

1. 석면산업이 계속적으로 유지될 수 있도록 석면업계에서는 로비를 하고 있다.

2. 각국 정부가 석면사용을 규제하는 것을 실패하고 있다.

3. 석면산업계로부터 지원받은 학자들이 "석면은 안전하다"는 의견을 주장하고 있다.
