In recent weeks it seems that not a day has gone by without another group in Canada speaking out about the country's historic support for the asbestos industry; this escalation of opposition from civil society has been truly astounding.
What is even more astonishing is that whereas some criticism of Canada's asbestos policy formerly appeared in the English-speaking media, nowadays the French-speaking media is also covering developments. As Quebec, the only province where asbestos is still mined in Canada, is French-speaking, this coverage is of great significance.

Elsewhere there have been many developments in recent days. The latest batch of articles on the IBAS website covers news from Asia, the Americas and Europe. On February 1 & 5 activists in India held demonstrations and press conferences which have reverberated around the world while the following week a paper was published which detailed the growth of a mesothelioma epidemic in Mexico, a country which imports 3.5% of Canada's annual asbestos output.
