"어릴 때 석면노출 될수록 중피종의 확률이 높아진다"
최근 프랑스 연구팀은 어릴 때 석면에 노출된 사람이 나이들어 노출된 사람보다 중피종의 확률이 더 높다고 밝혔다.
중피종은 희귀한 형태의 암이며 일반적으로 가슴과 흉부의 흉막과 복막에 발생하며 대부분 석면에 노출과 연관있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 석면은 상업적이나 자동차, 주택의 자재로 많은 양이 20세기 중반부터 사용되었다.
불행하게도, 중피종의 대부분 치료법은 수술과 항암치료이지만 효과가 좋지 않아 특별한 치료법이 알려져 있지 않다.
게다가 발병하기까지 20년이상 걸리기 때문에 조기 발견이 의미있는 방법 중에 하나이지만, 그 증상이 제한적인 장운동이나 흉통, 숨가쁨 등이 있는 꽤 모호한 상황이라 증상을 착각할 수도 있다.
유럽호흡기저널(European Respiratory Journal) 따르면, 1987년부터 지난 20년간 2,466명의 남자를 대상으로 한 연구결과 석면에 노출된 20살 이하의 남자가 중피종 확률이 높다고 했다.
그리고 대상자들이 석면에 노출되고 30년 이후까지 그 위험성이 증가한다고 보고했다. 곧 석면에 노출된 나이 든 사람
은 중피종 확률이 낮다는 것을 보여준다.
유럽의 연구자들은 프랑스중피종감시체계와 프랑스암등록체계에서 나온 여러 자료를 분석하여 위와 같은 결론을 내었다.
중피종은 매우 발견하기 어려운 질환이라 진단에 근거하여 성공적인 치료법이 매우 한정적이다. 방사선치료가 선호되는 방법중에 하나이고 항암화학요법과 병행된다. 하지만 이 치명적인 질병의 속도를 늦추는 수준뿐이지 제거될 수 있는 근본적인 방법은 되지 않는다. 또 다른 치료방법은 세침흡입(Fine Needle Aspiration)이 있는데 흉막의 침출수를 뽑아내는 것이다. 하지만 통증을 완화해줄 뿐이지 치료방법은 아니다.

A recent study by French researchers concludes persons exposed to asbestos at a young age are more likely to develop Mesothelioma than those exposed to asbestos at an older age.
An uncommon form of cancer, mesothelioma or pericardial mesothelioma generally attacks the lining of the internal organs in the abdomen and chest. Almost all cases of mesothelioma have been linked to exposure to asbestos, a material used frequently in thousands of commercial, automotive and residential industrial applications during the middle twentieth century.
Unfortunately, most common treatment options, such as excision surgery and chemotherapy are rarely successful and the disease continues to spread rapidly. To date, there is not a known cure for mesothelioma.
Further complicating recovery options is the detection of the disease, which can take 20 or more years to manifest.
Early detection is key to any meaningful success. Even if the disease is detected early, it can easily be mistaken for less severe conditions because its symptoms are vague including restricted bowel movements, chest pain and shortness of breath.
French Mesothelioma Study offers hope to older workers
Though rare, mesothelioma currently affects between 2,000 and 3,000 people in the United States on an annual basis. The study published in the European Respiratory Journal revealed that controlled subjects consisting of 2,466 males over a twenty year period beginning in 1987, showed men under 20 years of age exposed to asbestos were far more likely to develop mesothelioma.
The same study found risk levels continued to increase until approximately 30 years after the subject’s asbestos exposure had ended. The study further concluded that the older in age the person subjected to asbestos exposures, the less likely they were to develop symptoms of mesothelioma.
European researchers collected these data and other information from several health reports released by studies from the French National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program and the French Network of Cancer Registries.
Treatment Options
Because mesothelioma is so difficult to detect, there are few successful treatment options available upon diagnosis. Radiation is one preferred treatment, usually accompanied by chemotherapy. However, these treatments typically only slow the growth of the deadly disease, but do not eliminate it. Another form of treatment, known as the “fine needle aspiration” is a procedure in which excess fluid is drained from the pericardium. However, this procedure only helps to alleviate symptoms but is not a cure for mesothelioma.
