오스트레일리아 노동조합(Unions in Australia )은 연방정부가 의회에 제출한 법안인 석면 독립기관의 설립하는 것에 대해 환영의 입장을 나타냈다. '석면의 안전과 근절을 위한 기관'(The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency)은 국가의 석면제거에 관한 전략에 대해 모니터하며 공동 진행 뿐 아니라 석면의 유해성 인식 제고 캠페인도 벌일 예정이다. 이러한 성과는 수년간 석면사용 금지에 대한 노동조합과 지역단체의 캠페인 산물이다. 석면은 잘 알려진 발암물질이며 호주와 전세계에서 수천명을 사망케 하고 있다.
