Ban Asbestos Philippines Renews Campaign Pledge To Ban Asbestos

The Ban Asbestos Philippines today reaffirm its campaign commitment to advocate for a responsible asbestos-free Philippines.

¡°We cannot let our guard down because there are millions of Filipino workers who are counting on us. We cannot afford to lose them to inertia or default,¡± said Gerard Seno, executive vice president of the Associated Labor Unions and Building and Woodworkers International (BWI) ban asbestos coordinator during the campaign¡¯s a year-ender briefing with the local media.

Seno is also the newly elected secretary-general of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) during the labour centre¡¯s 8th regular national convention and 37th year anniversary held on Friday, December 14.

He cited as campaign victory the issuance early this year of a memorandum to all regional offices of the elementary, high school and colleges that effectively phases out and ban the use of asbestos-laden wire gauzes from all school campuses by the government¡¯s Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) upon learning from the campaign that it contain the hazardous substance.

¡°We have been using asbestos-laden wire gauzes for many decades and its only now that we empirically realize it contains cancerous asbestos. Because of our campaign, we virtually saved further exposure of current breed of young generation,¡± Seno stressed.

He also cited the campaign vigilance in calling government attention to an improper asbestos abatement of a private contractor from the Philippine Central Bank building in January preventing further exposure of construction workers, bank employees, and its surrounding immediate highly urbanized communities.

The campaign also penetrated third-party tri-media and new media players by publications in national media of campaign activities and policy positions.

The ALU-TUCP/BWI campaign partnership also crafted the ban asbestos bill and lobbying for its passage in the House of Representatives.

¡°We hereby renew our pledge to make a critical and a progressive engagement collaboration and engagement with government, stakeholders, and social partners here and abroad for a meaningful and lasting asbestos-free country,¡± he told reporters. ###
