18명의 석면 로비스트들이 5월 스위스 제네바에서 열리는 UN 로테르담 회의에 참석할 예정이다.
로테르담 회의의 목적은 유해물질로부터 인간을 보호하는 것이다. 하지만, 전세계 석면산업에서는 건강보호를 이익추구에 방해된다,고 보고 있다.
로테르담 회의는 유해물질을 수출할 때에 해당국가의 규정에 맞춰 환경적, 사회적 정의를 증진시키고자 한다. 그리고, 사전동의권리와 그에 따른 법적인 사항을 연계시켜 유해물질을 수출하거나 수입하는 개발도상국가들에게 제공하여 국민과 환경보호에 도움을 준다.
하지만, 석면산업은 수출로 수억달러의 이익을 추구하고 있다. 석면은 유해하다는 사실을 알리지 않음으로 사용을 권장하고 있다. 이런 전략은 석면의 판매가 증대될 수 있지만 무고한 삶들을 파괴시킨다.
18명의 석면 로비스트들은 UN 로테르담 회의에 참석하여, 현재 유일하게 전세계적으로 사용되고 있는 석면의 형태인 백석면이 유해물질 리스트에 추가되는 것을 반대할 것이다. 유해물질리스트에 추가되면 수출될 때에 안전경고와 함께 사전고지등이 동반되어야 한다.
석면 로비스트들은 러시아정부와 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 있다. 사실 석면 로비스트과 러시아정부를 구분하기는 불가능하다. 매년 백만톤 이상의 석면이 수출되는데, 러시아는 그 양의 3/4를 생산한다.
